Mera Peak Climbing Detail Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu:
As per your flight plan, we will be at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu to stretch out a warm welcome to you in our wonderful nation for the lovely outing. As you fly towards the International Terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport on a clear sunny day, you can see the breathtaking views of snow-capped mountain peaks spread in distance. Once you land, a representative from Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition will escort you to your hotel. The day is complete leisure. You can either choose rest at your hotel room and remove jet lag or take a short walk around in the ancient valley of Kathmandu.
Day 2: Preparation day and sightseeing tour around Kathmandu:
In the second day of your arrival, we will be taking you to the historical and cultural sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. We will take a tour around Kathmandu Durbar Square, Monkey Temple- Swoyambhunath Stupa – oldest monument in Kathmandu valley, Pashupatinath Temple – biggest Hindu Shrine and Bouddhanath- a massive Buddhist Shrine. All these historical monuments are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage site. You will be accompanied by the professional licensed guide during your city tour around the beautiful city of Temples.
Once you complete the day tour, you will be escorted to Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition office. In the office, you will be meeting up with the climbing leader who will brief you about the nature of expedition required equipment and the team formation. After the briefing is over, you will have time to do last minute shopping of the personal items that you need. In the afternoon, before we take a flight, the team leader will check everyone’s equipment, to make sure that everything is right.
Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla:
After the packing of our bags in the previous night, our trip starts today with a short drive to the only international airport of Nepal. Fly to one of the most dangerous airports in the world, the Tenzing Hilary Airport early in the morning. During the flight, enjoy a lot of views of the Himalaya from your plane seats. After our arrival at the Lukla airstrip, let the porters carry all of our trekking stuff and equipment as we sort things out. We will check in into the local lodge and spend the rest of the time in Lukla for acclimatization.
Day 4: Trek from Lukla to Chutang:
From today onwards the journey towards the most interesting and scenic place; Mera peak begins. After we have breakfast in the lodge, we will begin our trek towards the village of Chutang. The four our trek towards Chutang passes several villages and farmlands with great scenery of hills and valleys. Chutang is a summer pasture and grazing area surrounded with dense pine and rhododendron tree lines. Reaching this wonderful place, we will utilize the leisure time for resting and for acclimatization.
Day 5: Trek from Chutang to Tuli Kharka(Chatra-La):
In the early part of our trek, we will ascend to the height to cross over Kalo Himal Ridge around Nau Lekh rocky mountain range. After crossing the ridge, our trek takes the steep climb up to the top ridge also known as Zartwa Og (4,450). This place is decorated and festooned with many Buddhist prayer flags. Beyond here, our hike traverses over a boulder slope for a while and then again climbs uphill to Zartwa-La (4600 meters.). An hour downhill walks from this place marveling the stunning scenery, reaches to Tuli Kharka.
Day 6: Trek from Tuli Kharka to Kothe:
Leaving Tuli Kharka after the early breakfast, we will hike north to the main trail to Mera Peak. Along the trail today, you will have the excellent view of Peak 43 and Kusum Kanguru peaks. Continuing our hike, next to Majang Khola, we merge with another trail which moves alongside the Hinku Khola. Moving upstream for a while in the straight trail, we will reach Tashing Ongma. This village consists of small tea shops. Once we rest in this small village, we will continue our hike and cross a bridge over the Sanu Khola and eventually reach Kothe.
Day 7: Trek from Kothe to Thaknak:
Today is an excellent trekking day to phenomenal lake junction of Khola Kharka. During our hike today, we will be able to enjoy jaw-dropping views of the south face of Mera Peak throughout the day. Commencing our trek, we will take a pleasant walk through the forest of pine and rhododendron reaching a wide open valley with small Sheppard’s hut. Continuing the hike, we cross the small bridge before reaching Gonidshung near Thaknak area. At Thaknak you will encounter 200-year-old small gompa, which is built beneath the huge boulder. An hour walk from the ancient gompa will lead us to the camping area of Tangnang. This place is a temporary settlement of yak herders.
Day 8: Rest and acclimatization:
Taking a rest is the most crucial part in high altitude trekking. Resting before heading higher elevation helps to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness. So, we will take a day off to rest and acclimatization in the camp. At the day we will take a short hike to the viewpoint to enjoy the beautiful setting of this place. From the viewpoint, you can observe the outstanding scenery of the forest, landscapes surrounded by magnificent mountains.
Day 9: Trek from Thaknak to Khare:
After a good rest at the camp of Thagnak, we will start our morning walk following the lateral moraine of Dig glacier. During the walk towards the Dig glacier, you will get the opportunity to witness the breathtaking scenery of Charpate Himal which surrounds the Hinku valley. The trail then ascends steep uphill for a while and then goes downhill to a large pasture area of Dig Kharke. A short steep uphill hike, across the boulder-strewn hillside, reach Khare.
Day 10: Trek from Khare to Mera Base Camp:
We will reach our destination, Mera Base Camp, from where we will begin our Mera Peak expedition. Commencing on our trek today we will walk through a boulder-strewn course on a steep trail, climb over Mera Glacier and then a short walk on ice section reaches Mera Base Camp. From the Mera Base Camp, you can observe the outstanding views, which you will never forget. After reaching the base camp we will take a rest for acclimatization.
Day 11: Trek and Climb to High Camp:
After early breakfast in the camp, we will start our morning climbing up to the Mera La (5,400m/17,717ft.) crossing over Mera Glacier. The beginning of our trail is quite easy and gradually becomes steep as we approach towards the glacier. Here, you will need to stay focused and make sure that you are getting your foot placement correctly. You may also have to use the helmet and crampons as in this part of the trek there is a high possibility of rock falls. After a hard struggle to reach the top of the glacier, a walk around it is the most pleasing feeling, which will remain life-long. You could also enjoy the outstanding vistas of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Cho Oyu, Mt. Lhotse, Nuptse, Chamlang and Bruntse Peak. A short descent from the glacier reaches High Camp (5,800 m / 19,029 ft) hidden behind the rocky section.
Day 12: Summit to Mera peak(6654m) and ascend to Khare:
The most awaited and highlighted part of our trip has finally arrived. Today is the day we will summit the Mera Peak. Starting early before breaking of dawn, we will gradually climb to the summit of Mera Peak. However, the success of the climb depends upon the weather condition. As we will be starting our climb early, the temperature will be freezing at the beginning but soon we will be warmed up. From the peculiar ridge, you will be able to see the heavenly view of the first rays of the sun hitting the big peaks in an amazing red glow. 6 hours of slow and steady walk avoiding crevasses and climbing higher into ever-thinning air, we eventually reach to the summit of the Mera Peak. Once you reach the summit of Mera Peak, your dream will become a reality and fills you up with overwhelming joy. From here, you could also enjoy the breathtaking views of the mighty Himalayas including Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,210m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Kangchenjunga (8,586m), Nuptse (7,855m), Chamlang (7,319m), Baruntse (7, 129m) and others. After reaching the summit and enjoying the out of the world scenery of the mighty Himalaya ranges, we will retrace our steps back to the High Camp. At high camp we will rest for a while, back up your kit before we long descend to Khare.
Day 13: Contingency Day:
One extra day is needed here in case of any delay on the summit push because of the weather condition and any other circumstances.
Day 14: Trek to Kothe:
After a successful expedition of Mera peak, along with gathering the experience of a lifetime, we will retrace our trail from Khare to Kothe. We will take a pleasant walk through Thaknak, enjoying the moment, before reaching Kothe for the overnight stay. Once we reach Kothe, we will have a small celebration of a successful expedition of Mera Peak.
Day 15: Trek to Thuli Kharka:
Leaving the Kothe, we will begin our morning walk through the forested area with Blue Himalayan pines and rhododendron tree line. Our trail ascends for a while and descends to cross several tributaries of Inkhu Khola. Walking through chorten, passing several nice grazing area and meadow, we will take a steep to ascend uphill to reach Thulik Khara.
Day 16: Trek to Lukla via Zatrwa la pass:
Today is the long day walking and also the last day of the trek. We will climb over Naulekh Himal Ridge then Zartwa Og to reach Lukla. After a hard climb, we follow downhill leaving the alpine paradise to get to the village of Monjo. Follow the same trail as we followed earlier to get back to the village of Phakding. An easy walk along the Dudh Koshi will take us to the village of Lukla.
Day 17: Fly Back to Kathmandu:
Enjoy the view of the high peaks one last time. Fill yourself with fodder and then get on the plane from the Tenzing Hilary Airport to have views of the snow-capped peaks one last time. Upon our arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, we will drive you to your hotel.
Day 18: See You Again:
On the last day of our trip, representative of Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition will drive you to the airport according to your flight schedule back to home or onward destination.
