A truly amazing adventure in the Himalayas involves some admirable views of pristine lakes, high soaring mountains, impressive glacier, and epic base of the highest mountain in the world and involves high Himalayan pass crossing. An adventure trekking to Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes and Cho La pass is such a trip that gives you a thrilling adventure of life time.
This epic trip follows the Everest base camp trekking trail up to Namche bazar and makes a turn to west towards Gokyo valley via Dole instead of going straight on the base camp route. This small detour on the trip adds inexpressible charm of the mountains, lakes and glacier. The Gokyo lakes, Gokyo Ri, Ngozumpa glacier, and Cho La pass bring only wonderful experience of adventure trekking in the Himalaya. The trip eventually joins the Everest base camp trekking route in Lobuche after several days of peaceful and wonderful exploration in the Gokyo region. Then the trek continues exclusively to the Everest base camp. The trek returns back along the normal route that most base camp trekkers trek through.
You can undergo through this overwhelming trekking experience by adding only 3 or 4 extra days on the normal Everest Base Camp trekking days. A total 19 days of trip shows much more than the normal base camp trip. It leaves you practically speechless and in awe.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01Welcome to Kathmandu – 1,400mIn accordance with your flight schedule, we will be at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu to extend a warm welcome to you in our beautiful country for the beautiful trip. After exchanging warm welcome greetings at the arrival section, we will lead you to our vehicle to transfer you to our trip hotel. It’s a day at complete leisure on your own to relax the jetlag. But we definitely help you with the information to go around in case you’d like to do so.

Day 02Preparation and Sightseeing Tour of Kathmandu – BWe spend a full day in Kathmandu today which will be a necessary acclimatization day as well. Early in the morning after breakfast, we will meet for trip briefing where we will talk about this amazing trip in details and answer your questions should you have any. After the brief meeting is over, we are taking you for an amazing cultural sightseeing tour of heritage sites in Kathmandu valley. The sites we take you for the sightseeing today include Swoyambhunath - the oldest monument in Kathmandu valley, Kathmandu Durbar Square – to see the temple of Living Goddess and other medieval architectural wonders, Pashupatinath – to immerse into Hindu death rites on the bank of a holy river, and Boudhanath – a massive Buddhist shrine considered as the biggest in the world.

Day 03Kathmandu – Lukla 2,860m – Phakding 2,610m – B.L.DAs we have already packed our bags the previous night, the thing we do straight in the morning is drive to airport for an early morning flight to Lukla. With the excitement of being in the region of the highest mountain in the world, we board a small, fixed winged aircraft and set off on an adventurous yet worthy aerial journey to Lukla. Soon after an incredible flight experience, we will find ourselves at the amazing mountain town of Lukla, the gateway to Everest. We will meet all our supporting crew members at Lukla before setting off on the first day of trek. Once we sort out our stuffs, we start the trek to Phakding today. After about 4 hours of easy trek on gentle and gradual downhill trail, we reach Phakding on the bank of a beautiful mountain river called Dudh Koshi. The very first day of Everest trail walking will take us past some beautiful cultural and spiritual wonders in the forms of prayer flags, chhortens, mani walls etc.

Day 04Phakding – Namche Bazar 3,440m – B.L.DWe enjoy our breakfast with the serene sound of flowing Dudh Koshi before starting our second day of the trek to Namche Bazar today. The walk today mostly involves uphill effort with some steep going up. We cross several suspension bridges today on the trail as we proceed towards the destination. We check into the Sagarmatha National Park entrance check point just above the beautiful village of Monjo before continuing up towards Namche bazar. Once we reach Namche bazar, a prosperous mountain trading town in the Everest region, we will be able to observe and experience more of the amazing culture and life style of beautiful and famous Sherpa people. A nicely settled town in the terraced slope, Namche bazar showcases some spectacular views of mountains like Thamserku (6,6232m) and Kongde Ri (6,187m) to its west.

Day 05Acclimatization Day – B.L.DWe spend an extra day here at Namche today for acclimatization as we are already at 3,440 meters above sea level with a large portion of the stretch left to go higher in the days to come. As this is an acclimatizing day, we will go for a hiking trip to Everest View point right above Namche bazar to have the very first glimpse of the Mt. Everest. This spectacular view point brings the wonderful mountain views including Mt. Everest that keeps us motivated to go higher towards the base camp. Once we return back to Namche bazar after the hike, we can explore the town going through one end to the other of the town. We can indulge in some conversation with locals there; surf internet cafes; or simply relax and save the energy for the days to come.

Day 06Namche – Dole 4,050m – B.L.DWhile making it towards Gokyo valley, we leave the regular Everest Base Camp route back and head towards Dole today. This detour from the regular base camp trail gives us an opportunity to go through less crowded and more peaceful trail walking experience. Although the route has fewer trekkers on it, it offers several glorious views of the mountains. Dole is a small settlement in the Dudh Koshi river valley en route to Gokyo valley in the Khumbu region.

Day 07Dole – Machhermo 4,470m – B.L.DThe trek today takes us below Ngozumpa glacier to the place called Macchermo. The second day stopover on the Gokyo route from Namche bazar is a small settlement with beautiful view of the Himalayan landscape. Even the high altitude walk of the day brings some fascinating views of mountain peaks, Ngozumpa glacier and other breathtaking landscapes in the region. We experience the thinning air as we gain higher elevation and see the changing vegetation adapting more to the alpine climate. The walk becomes slower paced as the effect of increasing elevation.

Day 08Macchermo – Gokyo 4,750m – B.L.DThe walk from Machhermo to Gokyo today is a fantastic high altitude walk. The trek begins with an initial climb over a ridge that brings excellent views of Kangtega and Cho Oyu including several other breathtaking landscapes. The trail passes the village of Pangka and descends a bit just to start another climb towards the first lake past Nilbuk, an ancient cave along the trail. We walk past the first lake called Longponga and the second lake called Taujun. After crossing the second lake the trail fills up with huge boulders and leads us to the destination, Gokyo, for the day nestled just below Gokyo Ri on the bank of a beautiful lake. As the walk today is shorter and we reach Gokyo early in the afternoon, we will have enough time to soak into the beauty of the lake and surrounding.

Day 09Gokyo Ri (5,357m) Acclimatizing Hike – B.L.DAn extra day is essential here for two different reasons – to acclimatize and to explore the beauty of the region. We utilize this extra day at Gokyo by hiking very early in the morning to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) – an impressive vantage point to admire the incredible Himalayan view including Mt Everest, Lhotse Cho Oyu and Makalu. Gokyo Ri, also known as Gokyo peak, provides spectacular view of the lakes and glacier. We hike back down to Gokyo later and spend our time exploring the surrounding of one of the highest human settlements in the world.

Day 10Gokyo – Thagnak 4,750m – B.L.DAfter an incredible exploration and experience at Gokyo, we are trekking to Thagnak today. The walk today is easy without involving too much of strenuous uphill effort. The walk through Ngozumpa glacier brings us to Thagnak early in the afternoon allowing us enough time to acclimatize and get some rest before we ready to climb Cho La pass tomorrow. Once we reach the tea house at Thagnak, we can stay relaxed for a while and later set out on an exploration of the surrounding for the day.

Day 11Thagnak – Cho La 5,420m – Dzongla - B.L.DIt’s an effort demanding day today as we have to climb up to Cho La pass on the very initial part of the trek. The trek to Cho La is steep uphill on very tricky and vertical trail. The trail involves glacial trail walk to rocky trail traversing carefully up towards the top. The ice frozen beneath the rocks along the trail can make the trail slippery. If it is snowy, we need to do some good deal of climbing tasks along the trail to reach the top. The top welcomes us with spiritual prayer flags and spectacular view of the mountain peaks including impressive Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and Lobuche East.
The descent of the trail to Dzongla is another careful walk along the tricky trail passing through crevasse. Dzongla offers an excellent view of Ama Dablam, Lobuche and Cholatse peaks of the Himalayas.

Day 12Dzongla – Lobuche 4,94t0m – B.L.DIt’s another short and gentle walk of the trip. After such an effort demanding day of climbing over the Cho La pass, we take it easy day today to reach Lobuche where we meet the regular Everest Base Camp trekking route that we had left behind at Namche. We will meet several base camp trekkers and expedition adventurers at Lobuche. The trail gets more crowded now with more aspirant trekkers to the epic Everest base camp.
Once we reach Lobuche early in the afternoon, we take time to explore the surrounding and adjusting with the high altitude.

Day 13Lobuche – Everest Base Camp 5,364m – Gorakshep 5,164m – B.L.DWe are eventually going to make it to the Everest Base Camp today after these many days of trekking in and amidst the wonderful Himalayan peaks. Our determined and sincere effort to be at the base of the highest mountain in the world is going to materialize this afternoon. We are going to stand at the place where many climbers have spent days and nights training, preparing and attempting the summit of the formidable Mt. Everest.
We walk to Gorakshep, a small settlement on the glacial lakebed in the Everest region, where we are going to spend overnight today as the highest overnight stopover for the trip. After relishing our lunch at our tea house, we set off for the Everest Base Camp. A slow paced walk on the moraine and boulder strewn gradual path up to base camp is going to test our excitement and stamina. Anyway we are going to get to the base camp regardless of the difficulty of walking at the elevation. We click countless pictures and enjoy the moment of being at the classic Everest base camp before making a return trip to Gorakshep for overnight stay.
Goal reached! Mission accomplished!! Congratulations!!!

Day 14Gorakshep – Kalapatthar 5,545m – Pheriche 4,371m – B.L.DWe get up early, really early, in the morning to hike up to Kalapatthar, the highest elevation on the trip, for a breathtaking view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse and other Himalayan panorama up close with spectacular sunrise over those mighty peaks. This never-seen-before view and sunrise on earth is going to blow our mind away alluring us to stay there forever. Alas, we wish we could!
We have to make a return trip back to Gorakshep for breakfast. We start the trek back to Pheriche after breakfast. The trek down today is taking us to a new place that we have not covered on the trek. Pheriche is a beautiful settlement in the Khumbu reigon which is normally the stopover place for many Everest trekkers on their way back down after the base camp and Kalapatthar joy on the trip.

Day 15Pheriche – Khumjung 3,790m – B.L.DOn the way back down towards Lukla, we traverse the trail to Khumjung today which lies on a different route that normally doesn’t come on the way up to the base camp. Khumjung is a beautiful settlement situated near Mt. Khumbila with the view of other mountain peaks around. The Buddhist monastery here in the village has a Yeti Scalp. We can explore the monastery and village once we reach there to stay overnight.

Day 16Khumjung – Monjo 2,835m – B.L.DWe are walking down to Monjo today starting after breakfast at Khumjung. The walk today goes to meet the trail that we took on the way to Everest base camp a few days earlier. We trek down to Namche bazar and make a brief stopover to enjoy the charm of this mountain town considered as the Sherpa capital. We are ready to walk back down to Monjo after a nice break in Namche. The downhill trail takes us down to our destination which lies just the north of Phakding and South of Jorsalle, another beautiful village in the region.

Day 17Monjo – Lukla 2,860m – B.L.D It’s the last day of trekking when we trek to Lukla today. The lower we walk, the farther we are leaving the iconic Everest base camp behind physically but we are carrying a beautiful memory of being there. We cross suspension bridges and walk past Phakding and advance towards Lukla. Once we reach Lukla to bring our trekking part to an end, we duly thank our supporting team members. If it were not for their amazing effort, our journey would be very difficult. We celebrate the joy of making it to the base of the highest peak in the world.

Day 18 Lukla – Kathmandu 1,400m – BWe take a morning flight from the Lukla airstrip leaving the mighty mountains behind us. Another exciting flight with adventure takes us back to the city civilization. Once in Kathmandu, we spend leisurely time back in the chaos of the city after so many days of serene mountain air and incredible adventure.

Day 19 See You Again – BAs the last day on this trip, we drive you to airport as per your flight schedule back to home or onward destination.
We definitely hope that you enjoyed the Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes and Cho La and hope to see you for another adventure soon.
